Queen City Cruise benefits LMA--August 12, 2006

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 12.

Tacky Tourist Clubs of America, Seattle Chapter, presents Seattle's most fabulous water party each year in August. It's the Queen City Cruise, an unofficial and wholly unsanctioned queer exclamation point to Seafair, Seattle's annual watersports extravaganza.

Proceeds from the Cruise will be distributed among the Legal Marriage Alliance of Washington, Action Northwest, and Seattle Metropolitan Elections Committee for Sexual Minorities (SEAMEC)

Study: The Effects of Marriage, Civil Union, and Domestic Partnership Laws on the Health and Well-being of children

This report published in the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics finds that --

"Civil marriage is a legal status that promotes healthy families by conferring a powerful set of rights, benefits, and protections that cannot be obtained by other means. Civil marriage can help foster financial and legal security, psychosocial stability, and an augmented sense of societal acceptance and support. Legal recognition of a spouse can increase the ability of adult couples to provide and care for one another and fosters a nurturing and secure environment for their children. Children who are raised by civilly married parents benefit from the legal status granted to their parents."

Support the Religious Coalition for Equality

The Religious Coalition for Equality is one of LMA's key partners. RCE has created a great 15 minute video that describes what RCE is all about. This video is being shown at house parties around the state where people are gathering to support RCE's efforts to preserve the protections gained by our new antidiscrimination law and to secure full marriage equality for all loving couples without regard to sexual orientation. After seeing the video, you can donate to RCE directly and find out how to show the video at a house party.

Why Civil Unions Aren't a Substitute for Full Equality

As the Washington Supreme Court's decision on a marriage case draws near, Evan Wolfson writes that "The right way to end discrimination in marriage is to, well, end discrimination in marriage," not create a separate, gay-only status called civil union as a substitute for full equality. Wolfson explains how to make the case for marriage to neighbors, allies, and legislators, too. (Adaptation of the keynote address delivered at the LMA 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 16, 2005.)
